In Herzliya we will have the final Rally dinner and an opportunity to thank our hosts and organizers. This will be a final get-together with our friends and sailing companions before going our different ways.
After this, participants will be able to book their own tours to Jerusalem, Jordon and any other areas that they might wish to visit. There will be tour operators at the marina.
Petra (World Heritage Site 1985) was the capital of the ancient Arabic kingdom from the 4th century BC. Walled in by towering rocks except for a deep, narrow cleft, it was a major city on the caravan trade route from southern Arabia. Petra was subject to strong Hellenistic cultural influence and in 106 AD, it became part of the Roman province of Arabia. Subsequently decline in economic importance, Petra was forgotten until its ruins were identified in 1812. Now a major archaeological and tourist site, it is famous for its temples and tombs cut from cliffs. Much of the ancient city remains buried under sand dunes and major archaeological excavations are now being conducted there. Hiking into the ‘Red Rocks of Petra’ is a thrilling experience especially if you imagine that you might be in one of the ancient caravans of perhaps 5000 camels that has travelled from the east to arrive at this safe-haven.
Other places of interest to visit in Jordon include:
Mount Nebo
Wadi Rum
Amman
Jerash
